Founded in 1974 in the historic port city of Otaru, Hokkaido Wine Co., Ltd. emerged with the philosophy that 'wine making is agriculture.' This vision led them to partner with over 300 grape farmers across Hokkaido, creating an extensive network that would make them Japan's largest producer of 100% domestic grape wines. After nearly 40 years of persistence and innovation, they successfully established cultivation methods for German grape varieties in challenging conditions including heavy snowfall, clay soils, and wildlife damage. Their Tsurunuma Winery represents a triumph of determination over adversity. The company's commitment to showcasing Hokkaido's terroir through their Otaru, Hokkaido, and Tsurunuma wine series has earned them recognition as pioneers in Japanese viticulture. Their seasonal 'Otaru Hatsushibori' using freshly harvested grapes celebrates the unique character of each vintage year.
