Matsumura, representative of Burgundy Corporation, originates from Niigata Prefecture and brings a remarkably diverse background to winemaking. After beginning his career at a general trading company, he operated an exclusive wine bar specializing in Burgundy and Champagne in Tokyo's sophisticated Aoyama district, where he earned his sommelier certification.
During his trading company tenure, his responsibilities evolved from aviation-related export duties to managing broadcast rights contracts and television operations for Italian soccer's Serie A, including coverage during Nakata Hidetoshi's historic transfer and the France vs Japan match when France held the World Cup title. Through these experiences, he was profoundly moved by European clients who used wine as a sophisticated communication tool, developing a deep appreciation for wine's cultural significance and complexity.
In 2017, this appreciation led to his participation in launching a Hakodate project alongside his friend Etienne de Montille, president of the prestigious French winery 'Domaine de Montille.' By 2019, inspired by these collaborations, he made the ambitious decision to 'create wines for the world from Hokkaido,' identifying and clearing east-facing hills in Yoichi that remarkably resemble Burgundy's legendary Côte d'Or.
At his vineyard site, which commands stunning views over the city and Ishikari Bay, he pursues world-class wines with exceptional aromatics and impressive length, utilizing carefully selected plantings of 10 distinct Pinot Noir clones, 4 specialized Chardonnay clones, and the promising Albariño variety.
